TikTok Tests 60-Minute Videos to Compete with YouTube

TikTok is testing 60-minute videos with a limited group of users to compete with YouTube for long-form content. This move could attract more creators and the film industry to the platform, although widespread rollout is not imminent.

TikTok is experimenting with hour-long videos among a select group of users. This move could position TikTok as a strong competitor to YouTube for long-form content.

TikTok's Move Towards Longer Videos

TikTok is testing the introduction of one-hour videos on its platform. This feature, spotted by social media expert Matt Navarra, was confirmed by ByteDance on May 16, 2024, to TechCrunch. However, the option remains available to a limited group of users in specific markets, and TikTok has clarified that it will not be rolled out widely for the time being.

When the app was launched, video duration was limited to just 15 seconds. Over the years, the social network has progressively increased this limit, which is now set at 10 minutes. Furthermore, in November 2023, The Information revealed that TikTok was encouraging some of its most popular creators to adopt longer formats.

TikTok Challenges YouTube

By extending the duration of its videos, TikTok aims to compete with YouTube, which dominates this format. This strategy could help TikTok retain some creators and attract the film industry, which has already heavily invested in YouTube. On TikTok, vertical streaming is currently booming, but the time limit often forces users to publish their content in multiple parts.

In addition to extending video duration, TikTok encourages users to publish their content in horizontal format, which has contributed to YouTube's success. Last January, the social network offered a boost in views for 72 hours to creators who posted videos longer than a minute in landscape mode. However, the app has yet to be fully optimized to leverage this horizontal format.
